Plane crashes on highway: everyone saved

Published: October 18, 2005

TWO people have been pulled out of the wreckage of their light airplane after it crashed landed on a highway in New Zealand and exploded into flames.

Locals rescued the two passengers onboard and bathed them in a lake about 10 metres from the crash site.

The pair suffered serious upper body burns and were airlifted to Waikato Hospital north of the capital Wellington.

“They were bathed there for their burns by locals until the ambulance arrived, which was quite lucky for them,” Senior Sgt. Tony Jeurissen said.

It appeared the two-seater Lancair 360 “hit the road, veered off to the left and struck a resident’s property” he said.

Authorities said they were amazed the plane, which crashed into State Highway One between Taupo and Turangi, didn’t hit a car.

Television station TVNZ described it as a busy stretch of road which at that time of day normally carried many vehicles, including school buses and tourists, often used the road.

Witnesses to the crash told police they heard the aircraft splutter before it plummeted to the ground.
