Katrina Evacuee Wins $25,000 In Lottery

Published: October 18, 2005

A Katrina evacuee’s luck has apparently changed now that he’s the biggest winner so far in the Oklahoma lottery.

Caronell Allen won a $25,000 prize.

It was a long trip to Oklahoma from New Orleans for Allen’s family, but a much shorter trip to the Buy 4 Less just up the block.

“I went over there and bought me a ticket, and I walked around with the ticket in my pocket before I scratched anything, and it so happened I finally sat down and scratched,” Allen said. When he eventually scratched, he knew he had won something; however, store officials said they couldn’t pay.

“I think I won like $600 or $700,” he said.

A store associated had better news. Allen had just won $25,000.

He said he’d like to open a restaurant, but Allen’s wife has her sights set on a home.

“Then we can get a restaurant afterward. That’s what I am talking about,” she said.

Allen just started a new job in construction three days ago. He said he’s thankful for everything Oklahomans have done for him.
