Dramatic rescue of trapped tanker ship worker

Published: October 18, 2005

Firefighters dramatically rescued an iron worker from a tanker ship Monday by cutting a gaping hole in the vessel’s hull.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office says the man became trapped in the ship after falling from 20 feet above.

Dispatchers rushed heavy rescue units to the scene, near 1200 Sertoma Dr., around 9:30 Monday morning. Crews were staged on the southern edge of the Port of Tampa’s industrial east side.

After slicing through the vessel’s thick metal skin, the man was pulled out and onto a rescue basket. He was then hoisted to safety by a crane.
