Man falls of cliff: saved by mobile phone
Published: October 17, 2005
A MAN who took a shortcut up a cliff and got stuck at 160ft, managed to cling on with one hand and dial 999 with the other.
Matthew Seymour, 21, then dangled for 20 minutes until a helicopter plucked him to safety.
Coastguard Nigel McColm said: “I don’t know how he managed to get his phone out on the cliff but it’s a good job that he did.
“If he had lost his grip he would have got serious injuries or been killed.”
Matthew, of Birmingham, had been walking in the rain on a beach at Portland, Dorset, when the path ran out. Instead of retracing his steps, he tried to scale the cliff.
He clambered 140ft up a steep bank and began to scale a 40ft sheer rockface when he froze.

Mr McColm added: “When we got to him his arms were stretched above his head and his feet were resting on a jagged edge. He seemed to be calm.”
