Ginger The Dog Is Back With Her Pack
Published: October 16, 2005
As Hurricane Katrina hit, tens of thousands of victims grabbed what they could and raced to safety, leaving behind their beloved cats and dogs.
One precious pet was rescued and sent to live in Northwest Suburban Buffalo Grove. But a dog never forgets her rightful owner.
Ginger the dog is back with her pack, a happy reunion made possible in part by Cynthia Schleich.
She and her family fostered Ginger after the Almost Home Foundation rescued the pooch post-Hurricane Katrina.
She was alone, but not forgotten.
“I just didn’t want to leave her,” said Ginger’s Dad Terrell Keene. “Really I didn’t.”
But the chopper crew that lifted Terrell Keene out of the New Orleans flood zone said his dog had to stay, so he left her food and water and hoped someone would find her.
The volunteers who did brought her to Illinois.
“I thought I had to find her owner,” Cynthia said. “So we tried the number on the tag and couldn’t get through.”
Then they took a closer look at Ginger’s rabies tag and discovered they’d been calling the wrong number.
The Schleichs eventually got it right and got in touch with Ginger’s kin.
“It was like heaven sent,” said Terrell. “It was wonderful.”
They got the news just as they were going back to their ruined home.
“If it wasn’t for that call before we got there that they had Ginger, I think my wife would have lost it because of the damage we saw at the house,” Terrell said.
“They said all that matters now is they’ve got their Ginger,” Cynthia said.
“We love you guys. Thank you so much,” said Ginger’s Mom Quintetta Keene.
This wasn’t Ginger’s only traumatic experience. She was recently hit by an SUV and survived that too. She’ll join her family now in Missouri, where they’re relocating.
