A write good way to help charity

Published: October 14, 2005

YOUNGSTERS had a way with words when they raised £1,300 for a children’s charity during a sponsored spellathon.

Pupils from Normanton Junior School got to grips with their vocabulary to help support the NSPCC’s Full Stop campaign which aims to stop young people suffering from abuse.

The pupils of the Church Lane school decided to take on the spelling challenge after an assembly which highlighted the plight of children who are mistreated.

Headteacher Anne Evans said: “It was very positive and they were thrilled at the amount they raised. They were very proactive in learning their spellings as well and Sarah Tarpy, the NSPCC’s schools organiser, was thrilled to bits.

“She presented the children with certificates and covered the key parts of the campaign. The children have been hardworking and it just shows their caring nature and the support of parents has produced a wonderful result. The total is absolutely magic.”

Miss Tarpy, the NSPCC’s West Yorkshire schools organiser, said it was great to have the children’s generous contribution.
