10-year-old grows a gift for a stranger

Published: October 14, 2005

Mariah Kowalski’s mother liked her daughter’s ”thick and beautiful“ hair too much to let her cut it. Except for a good cause, that is.

Wednesday night, after more than two years of letting her hair grow, Mariah had 10 inches of her blond hair cut off to donate to Locks of Love. The non-profit organization provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss.

Mariah’s mom was deeply impressed by her daughter’s desire to do something for others. She explained how it took Mariah a lot of determination to continue growing her hair, even when it was hot and it got in the way while swimming. A few times she considered cutting it early but never had to be talked into waiting, according to her mom.

”She didn’t necessarily want it long,“ said Laurie. ”And the fact that she was wanting to do this at 8 years old.“

Ten now, Mariah used her mom’s hair appointment at Regis Salon so The Journal could get her picture in Thursday’s paper. Andrea Seaboy performed the ”chop“ and then styled Mariah’s hair at about shoulder length.

”She is relieved that she can help and that she can finally style her hair any way she wants,“ said Laurie.

Seaboy mentioned hair donations have been gaining popularity of late, especially with younger girls who need an extra boost to get that first big hair cut.

”It is going to feel good having short hair,“ said Mariah as she was getting her hair washed. ”I always had to put it in a pony tail.“

Will she grow it out to donate again? She smiled. ”Maybe.“
