Stolen dog returned to owner by person who took it
Published: October 13, 2005
A woman whose dog disappeared while she was shopping along Northwest 23rd Avenue in Portland was close to being reunited with the canine Wednesday morning.
Diane Eide says she tied up her dog, Leo, outside an establishment along the busy stretch of shops and restaurants while she was inside. When she came out, Leo was gone.
Eide says she got an anonymous message on her phone later in the day from a person who Eide says took the dog and may have felt leaving Leo tied up on the sidewalk was abusive.
The person who left the message chastised Eide and said she should “take better care of her dog.”
Debbie Ellis says she took the dog to an animal shelter after she saw it had been tied up for what she claims was over an hour.
Ellis says she does not beleive it is right to tie dogs up for an extended period of time while downtown.
Leo was wearing a dog tag with Eide’s phone number on it at the time he disappeared.
Early Wednesday morning, a friend of Eide met with Ellis and Leo was returned after a brief conversation.
Eide says a police officer told her that several similar incidents had taken place in the same area, although a police spokesman would not corroborate that statement with KATU.
