Disabled Hurricane Survivor Reunited With Dog

Published: October 13, 2005

It’s been more than a month since Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, and displaced victims are still trying to reconnect with loved ones. In fact, one man has gone through a long struggle to find his best friend.

When Hurricane Katrina sent water rushing into New Orleans, William Morgan, a veteran and double amputee, swam to the safety of his rooftop. Then he heard his dog Morgan LaFey drowning, so he swam back in.

“She was going ‘roof, roof, roof, roof, roof, roof, roof.’ She wants to come out to so I had to go back in get her,” Morgan said.

He pulled her to the roof and there they waited for rescue for more than a day, but when the Coast Guard came, his best friend had to be left behind.

“As I motored away she was crying her eyes out,” Morgan continued.

William was flown to the VA Medical Center in Miami, and he hadn’t seen his dog since he left New Orleans. So, when Randi Bildner heard the story, she had to help.

“I told Mr. Morgan that I would do anything and everything to find his dog,” Bildner said.

She scoured the internet looking for an apricot standard poodle, wearing a rhinestone collar. The description sounded very familiar to the animal rescue group called ‘Best Friends.’

Not only did ‘Best Friends’ find a dog that fit Morgan LaFey’s description in Louisiana. They found two of them, and the only person who could tell them apart was William - the rightful owner.

In an instant the man who thought he had lost everything was at a loss for words.

Like other Katrina victims, William has to start over, but at least now he has his best friend to do it with.
