Determined Minnesota trucker reunited with dog lost in Alabama

Published: October 13, 2005

Minnesota trucker Tom Nelson had adopted Checkers, a Brittany Spaniel, only six weeks earlier, but when she jumped from his cab and disappeared into woods on a stop in Florence last Friday, he was determined to find her.

In fact, he drove up and down the country to put her back in his arms.

Nelson, unable to find Checkers when she fled his semi-rig during a delivery in Florence Lauderdale Industrial Park, had to leave and complete his route. But the resident of Albert Lea, Minn., drove about 900 miles back to Florence in his personal vehicle Monday.

With help from workers at the park, Checkers was found behind the Essex Wire plant, where she had been given food and water but would not go near people.

He said she had been abused by a previous owner and was leery of strangers. “She came to me,” Nelson told the TimesDaily in a story Wednesday.

“I knew it was her from 300 feet away,” he said. “That orange color she has is predominant.”

Nelson took Checkers to a veterinarian Tuesday for treatment of what appeared to be a broken foot that she suffered during her ordeal.

“I was tickled to death he got her back,” said animal control officer Kenny Price, who joined Nelson in the search. “It made my day.”
