As school came down, teacher saved 45 kids

Published: October 13, 2005

Two sisters have given the quake-hit a reason to smile. While one of them, a private teacher, rescued 45 kids from a collapsing school building on Saturday, the other sold her ear-rings to buy medicines for those who were injured.

Mansi Bakshi, a teacher with the Chailaya Academy in Suthra Bali Bowli area, is now in hospital, with her leg fractured while saving her students—and inspiring younger sister Sapna.

Mansi, the only teacher at the recently opened academy here, was with her students in class and when she felt the first tremor. Immediately, she started taking the children out, one by one.

She continued even as academy building started collapsing. But as she got out, the building fell, injuring her.

‘‘I was the last when a stone fell. Madam saved me and stone fell on her,’’ said Rohit, a student.

Residents here said it was only due to Mansi’s prompt effort that the children were saved. ‘‘Otherwise, it would have been a tragedy,’’ says Subhash Chand, a resident.

Then it was Sapna’s turn to do her bit—she sold her gold ear-rings to purchase medicines that were urgently needed for some of the children, who were injured.

‘‘It was my moral responsibility. We were able to save their lives, it’s a big thing,’’ says Sapna.
