New Program Helps Teacher Get Needed Supplies

Published: October 11, 2005

William Miller teaches, Math, Reading and English to students at Watkins-Nance Elementary School in Columbia. His toughest assignment is finding money for classroom projects.

Miller said, “It limits how many books I can purchase and in some situations and it limits what kind of supplies I can use.”

Hope came for Miller and teachers across the state Monday morning, as the DonorsChoose South Carolina Program was launched at his school.

Miller said, “This is a way that everyone involved in education can contribute. The market can help us and our students and teachers can reach out and let people know.”

Teachers and students submit projects they would like to do in class, along with how much it will cost. From there the projects are screened and posted to the “DonorsChoose” website, and anyone who logs on can make a donation of any amount.

Miller said, “It will take the burden off of teachers’ shoulders because many times teachers go into their own pockets when it comes to buying supplies to fund projects.”

Now, Miller’s glad he won’t have to worry about how much it will cost to get his creative class projects off the ground.

Go to DonorsChoose.org to search all the projects posted. From there, you can make a donation.

Money is never sent directly to the school or teacher, but the supplies they request are.
