Laramie French teacher is Wyoming Teacher of the Year

Laramie High School French teacher Carol Kirkwood was honored as Wyoming Teacher of the Year. Local and state education officials surprised Kirkwood, presenting her the award at a schoolwide assembly Monday morning.
“It’s a tremendous honor,” Kirkwood said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. “I’m just amazed and grateful and proud — so proud to represent Albany County this way, and especially Laramie High School.”
Kirkwood has taught French at Laramie for 33 years and was twice previously named the school’s teacher of the year by graduating seniors.
“I am thrilled to be able to recognize such an outstanding Wyoming teacher,” state Superintendent of Public Instruction Jim McBride said in a news release; snow prevented him from attending the presentation.
Former students graduating from the University of Wyoming Honors Program have named Kirkwood their most influential pre-college teacher four times since 1995.
One former student, in helping to nominate Kirkwood, wrote: “Not only is Mrs. Kirkwood passionate about French language and culture, she is passionate about learning. Because of her educational experiences both before and after becoming a teacher, she is no stranger to the joy that learning can bring.
“Her dedication to helping students become passionate, not only about what they learn, but about learning itself is a valuable quality for any great teacher to possess.”
Kirkwood receives a $5,000 award from the state.
