New protein may aid cancer fight

Published: October 10, 2005

Queensland researchers have found a new protein that could help prevent the development of cancer.

The Queensland Institute of Medical Research has found a protein that may stop cells multiplying irregularly.

Irregular cells can lead to cancer.

Dr Megan Fabbro says the institute is still working to gain a full understanding of the protein’s involvement.

“The next step is to try and understand what happens in a cancer situation, we’ve started to unravel some of those,” she said.

“So in terms of it getting into being a cancer therapeutic, that’s still quite a number of years off but it’s definitely heading in the right direction.”
