Stolen ashes of baby boys returned
Published: October 9, 2005
Thieves with some sort of conscience have returned the ashes of twin Canadian baby boys they found in luggage they stole yesterday.
Lower Hutt police Senior Sergeant Geoff Hancock said the luggage was stolen from a car driven by a Canadian family on holiday.
The vehicle was parked in a school ground for just an hour but when the family returned they found their entire luggage stowed in the rear of the car gone.
The Canadians were distraught because an urn with the ashes of their twin baby boys, who died just before the New Zealand trip, was in one of the stolen suitcases.
Police said they were contacted yesterday and the ashes were returned anonymously.
A Sunday newspaper reported the twins were born prematurely in Australia three months ago.
The paper named the boys as Clark and Joey Sinclair.
Their mother Sandy hoped other personal property such as photos would be returned too before she and her husband flew home to Canada.
Police added a van had been seen parked alongside the Canadians’ car yesterday while they were absent from it and a Maori or polynesian man was seen taking property from the car into his vehicle.
