Fill your brain when you like: school open 364 days a year
Published: October 9, 2005
A head teacher who advises the UK Government is planning to open his school for 364 days a year with shifts and staggered holidays.
Teachers and pupils would attend for 190 days as present but on a rota system that would include weekends and all public holidays, except Christmas Day.
The revolutionary school year for Hollingworth High, a comprehensive in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, has been drawn up by Paul Mortimer, who is an adviser to the Department for Education’s innovation unit.
Mr Mortimer, who is the school’s chief executive, wants to divide the 1,200 pupils into eight groups, each with different term times and holidays. He will take the views of staff into account before finalising the changes, due in 2008.
The National Union of Teachers said members would be “very angry” to lose their traditional holidays and free weekends.
