Hurricane Victim And Abandoned Dog Reunited By Fate
Published: October 7, 2005
Heather Roux has had a long hard trip from her home in New Orleans. The small dog is 14, has trouble hearing, and can barely see.
When Hurricane Katrina tore into the city, her owner had to evacuate; but couldn’t take Heather Roux or her other dog.
“She was in a home, we could hear her barking,” said Claudia Moore from ‘Pasado Rescue’.
Moore is with Pasado’s Safe Haven. The local pet rescue group was in New Orleans and found the little dog hiding in a back bedroom.
“They’re absolutely scared to death,” she said. “In their eyes, they’ve been abandoned. They have been totally alone for days,”
Rescuers brought Heather Roux to Redmond with other homeless dogs. The others may go to foster homes.
But not Heather Roux, she’s getting a bath for her big day.
You see, amazingly, her owner ended up just up the road with family in Marysville. A relative in New Orleans found a card the rescue group left behind.
Janice Hebbler hasn’t seen her dog for a month. When the little dog walked out of an animal hospital in Redmond, she knew it was her.
“Sweetie. Look it’s me,” said Janice Hebbler. “Yeah, we’re going home baby,”
Leaving her two dogs behind broke her heart.
It was the saddest day of my life, and I didn’t know what was going to happen to them,” said Hebbler. The water was coming up, and I had no choice.”
Her other dog didn’t make it, but Janice still feels blessed.
“I never thought I’d seen either one of them again,” said Hebbler. “The fact that the two of us ended up in the same spot. It’s pretty incredible.”
Now Heather Roux and Janice will start over. Separated by the storm, brought together by fate and some people who cared.
