Teen punches crocodile, saves 10 yo girl
Published: October 5, 2005
A TEEN boy punched a 3m crocodile while his father wrestled his sister, 10, from its jaws in the Kimberley region.
Chantal Burnup was swimming in the Sale River with her father Richard and brother Simon, 14, about 1pm on Monday when a crocodile grabbed her by the torso and began pulling her underwater.
She suffered bruises, puncture wounds and lacerations in the attack but was yesterday considered to be in a satisfactory condition.
The children were less than a week into a three-month sailing trip to Cairns when the incident happened.
Mr Burnup and the children had left their catamaran in Doubtful Bay, 240km from Derby, before taking a dinghy up the river for a swim.
Crocodile expert Malcolm Douglas said such an attack was not unexpected, with crocodiles more aggressive during the breeding season.
