Evacuee reunited with pooch after hurricane

Published: October 5, 2005

A hurricane evacuee staying in Central Texas and his four-legged friend were reunited Tuesday after the dog disappeared more than a week ago.

A tail wagging and a pat on the head made for a happy reunion. Reba the greyhound and her owner Terry Brown saw each other for the first time in nearly two weeks. The two wound up in the McLennan County town of Rosenthal after evacuating Houston before Hurricane Rita struck.

But Reba got loose one night and Brown thought his pal of twelve years was lost forever.

“When I left, I didn’t think I would see her again,” he says.

That was until Reba was found and taken to the Texas Greyhound Association in Lorena, where Lois Mowery was able to identify Reba’s owner from a numbered tattoo in her ear.

Mowery says Reba is a true survivor. She escaped Rita, only to face and survive the elements of Central Texas: “Out where she was found, the lady was worried because she has coyotes, but she’s a survivor. With her being as old as she is, she survived the heat, the fleas and ticks.”

Mowery says she’s sad to see Reba go home, especially since she’d gotten so used to having her around.

Brown says, “I was elated; it was really great to know she was alive and well.”

Brown says from now on he’ll keep a tighter rein on Reba

The Texas Greyhound Association housed 150 greyhounds during Hurricane Rita. All of the dogs have since been returned to their owners.
