Policeman rescues woman, dog

Published: October 1, 2005

A MELBOURNE woman had to be rescued by police after wading into the Yarra River to save her dog from being swept away.

The woman had been walking her white fluffy dog along the river at Templestowe about 1.15pm (AEST) when it jumped into the fast flowing water.

The woman, 33, followed it in, but became stranded in the current.

Constable Simon Jones arrived 15 minutes later to find the woman holding her dog and clinging to a tree branch in one-and-a-half-metre deep water.

While another person on the bank held onto him, the Eltham policeman grabbed the dog and passed it to safety on the river bank, before pulling the woman back to dry land.

The woman and dog were no worse for the dunking, but Const Jones said he would spend the rest of the day trying to dry out his police uniform.
