Surgeon wins award for global eye charity work

A HIGHGATE eye surgeon has been named volunteer of the year for her work to help prevent blindness across the globe.

Gill Adams, who works at Moorfields Hospital, picked up the honour at the annual UK Charity Awards on Thursday.

Ms Adams has flown round the world visiting hospitals in places as far flung as China, Ethiopia, Jamaica and Vietnam for the last five years for eye charity Orbis.

A specialist in treating eye conditions in children, she has helped to give local doctors valuable skills.

She said: “I am thrilled that the judges and others in the charity sector have recognised the long term impact of the work that Orbis does.
