Moment Was Golden For Educator: Dodge awarded teacher of the year

Published: September 30, 2005

Dodge began her teaching career in Skaneateles, N.Y., at the Waterman Elementary School where she worked as a kindergarten through grade 5 special education resource room teacher from 1977 to 1982. From 1988 to 1997, she worked as a kindergarten through grade 8 special education teacher at Fields Memorial School in Bozrah, and she came to Montville in September 1997 as a kindergarten through grade 5 special education teacher at Dr. Charles E. Murphy School.

β€œI’ve taught in other school districts, but Montville does truly make you feel like family. They go out of their way,” Dodge said.

Dodge received her associate’s degree in liberal arts from Monroe Community College, Rochester, N.Y., in 1975; her Bachelor of Science degree in special education from the State University at Geneseo, Geneseo, N.Y., in 1977; and her Master of Science degree in Learning Disabilities from Nazareth College, Rochester, N.Y., in 1983.

Dodge is a member of the National Education Association, Connecticut Education Association and Montville Education Association.

Dodge has been a cooperating/mentor teacher since 2001. She recently participated in extensive training to become board certified as an associate behavior analyst (ABA). After attending an assistive technology workshop, she then provided training to the staff members at Dr. Charles E. Murphy School on ABA and also in the use of the assistive technology software.

Family, friends and co-workers were all present to share their congratulations. Her sister Susan Hall, and mother, Jeanette Palange, traveled from New York to see Dodge honored.

Dodge has a husband Michael and three children — Mickey, 23, Dan, 20, and Christopher, 18. Michael Dodge grew up in Montville.

Montville has been awarding the Teacher of the Year award since 1997.

β€œIt’s a way of giving someone something for doing a little extra,” said Sandra Berardy, chairman of the Board of Education.

Dodge will compete against 11 to 14 other Teacher of the Year nominees for the Connecticut Teacher of the Year.
