Baby’s miracle escape: bullet stops short
Published: September 30, 2005
A BABY narrowly escaped death when a bullet fired into an Upper Clapton flat ricocheted around the room and came to rest between the tot’s legs.
The 10-month-old child was lying on the floor of the lounge when the bullet exploded through the ceiling and bounced off the walls.
The frantic mother, who was in the room at the time, found it lying just millimetres from her baby and called police.
Dozens of armed officers raced to Fulke House on the Hunsdon estate, off Brooke Road, at 12.45pm on Sunday. No gunman or weapon was found.
Detectives believe the gun may have been accidentally discharged by someone who broke into the loft area on the roof of the five-storey block.
The family have asked to remain anonymous.
Despite the fact that Fulke House lies just off Upper Clapton Road, only yards from Hackney’s notorious “Murder Mile”, neighbours say the incident is completely out of character for the block.
