15 yo Charity abseil girl goes up on high

Published: September 30, 2005

WHILE many people may be mad enough to abseil giant buildings in the name of charity, few are as young as schoolgirl Lauren Ledger who at just 15 years old, is one of the youngest ever charity abseilers.

After reading in The Guardian that the British Red Cross were looking for fundraisers to take part in a sponsored abseil in Sheffield, Lauren decided she would like to give it a go.

She contacted the Red Cross but was told that abseilers must be 16-years-old but as an experienced Explorer with the scouts, Lauren had already done all the abseil training.

“I love outdoor activities and when I saw this one advertised I decided I wanted to give it a go,” said Lauren, who attends Portland School.

“You usually have to be 16 but because I had experience of abseiling which I had got while on camps and outings, they said I could do it.”

Lauren successfully completed her abseil down the Hotel Bristol in Sheffield, on Sunday and raised £162 for the British Red Cross.

“It was very exciting although it was a bit scary when I looked over the edge,” said Lauren.
“It’s great to raise money for such a good cause and I think my family were very proud of what I have done.”

The Red Cross has promised to send Lauren details of other fundraising events in the area, so she is looking forward to taking part in another one soon.
