2005 ‘Heroes’ named starting today

Published: September 29, 2005

The Jersey Journal begins announcing its 2005 Class of Everyday Heroes today with the naming of Frank Pinto of North Bergen and Lillian Hernandez of Jersey City as joint recipients of the Community Service Award.

Now in its 17th year, The Jersey Journal Everyday Heroes/Newspapers in Education Awards program recognizes unsung heroes who go above and beyond the call of duty to make Hudson County a great place to live and work.

The paper solicited nominations from readers over the summer and recently held a judging session with Journal staffers; representatives of Hudson County Community College, New Jersey City University and St. Peter’s College; and Assemblywoman Joan Quigley of Jersey City, who had been integral to the paper’s previous awards program, the Women of Achievement program.

The Women of Achievement program feted hundreds of women over 25 years. Since that program ended, the Everyday Hero Awards have honored scores of residents in a variety of categories.

This year’s heroes will be feted Oct. 18 at an awards dinner at the Hi-Hat in Bayonne. Honorees will be announced this week and next in the following categories:

INSPIRING CONFIDENCE IN YOUNG WOMEN: Those who set young women on the road to success by helping build self-esteem and the confidence needed to excel.

ARTS IN ACTION: Those who encourage Hudson County residents to participate in and appreciate the arts.

BUSINESS WITH A CONSCIENCE: A Hudson County business that contributes to our local communities.

NEWSPAPERS IN EDUCATION: A teacher who incorporates The Jersey Journal into the classroom, building awareness of public affairs and enriching students’ educational experiences.

TEEN HERO: An extraordinary local teen who demonstrates a strong commitment to the community and his or her own personal development.

THE BETTY FOLEY MEMORIAL AWARD: Those who best exemplify the giving spirit of late Jersey Journal staffer Betty Foley, who, in her personal life, was active in church activities, the College Community Orchestra and the YMCA of Jersey City.

COMMUNITY SERVICE: Those who reach out to others to improve the quality of life in Hudson County municipalities.

The program enjoys strong support from the community in the form of corporate sponsorships.
