Mother, Daughter Reunited After Hurricane Katrina

Published: September 28, 2005

In Pine Bluff, a mother is reunited with her daughter after weeks of thinking she had been killed by Hurricane Katrina. Tuesday at the Pine Bluff Convention Center, Rochelle Martin was reunited with her daughter, Antoinette Tersegno, and it’s all thanks to help from the Red Cross.

It’s a reunion that will tug at your heartstrings. After weeks apart, the mother and daughter are finally together.

(Antoinette Tersegno) “I’m okay.. I’m alive.. I’m alive.”

Rochelle Martin evacuated to Texas with news of Hurricane Katrina. Her daughter Antoinette stayed behind to take care of her dog. But after the furious storm, all communication between the two was lost. Rochelle says she thought her daughter was dead. After the loss of her husband just this year, the thought of losing another family member was unbearable. Tuesday’s reunion was like no other.

(Rochelle Martin) “The Red Cross, they have been wonderful. They found her. It took a while. I think I was here two weeks before I could find you… I just didn’t have any access or anything.

Antoinette Tersegno was a struggling artist in New Orleans. The family now plans to stay in Pine Bluff permanently.
