Bird, Cat Rescued From Apartment Fire

Published: September 27, 2005

Firefighters rescued a bird and cat Monday from an apartment fire.

Firefighters were called to the Willow Park Apartments just after 10 a.m. Monday. The flames were quickly extinguished in a third-story apartment.

Everyone was evacuated from the complex at 200 Dickman Road.

The person living in the unit with the animals was not home at the time. Firefighters were unable to rescue the bird. They did manage to save the owner’s other pet named Scooby Doo.

Firefighters have “been giving him oxygen. When we got in there, he was curled up in a ball and wasn’t doing too good. We scooped him up and got him out of the smoke,” said Joy Rhoten, of the Des Moines Fire Department.

They said the apartment where the fire started looks as if it could be a total loss.

The rest of the building appears to have only slight smoke and water damage.

There were no major injuries to report.

Firefighters said they think the cat will make a full recovery.

Fire investigators are looking into how the blaze started.
