$100 help for cat they don’t own

Though it’s not unusual for animal lovers to spend big bucks spoiling their pets, Brenda LaChapelle and Jeff Hoch of Jackson doled out $100 for a cat they don’t own.
About two months ago, LaChapelle and Hoch discovered a cat in a tree at the playground in Ella Sharp Park. After several days and one unsuccessful attempt to reach the cat themselves using an extension ladder, the husband and wife sought help.
LaChapelle said most of their telephone calls were a dead end until Hudson’s Tree Service, Rives Junction, agreed to go up after the animal for a $50 fee.
Unfortunately, a tree branch broke during their rescue efforts and the cat made an escape, avoiding the very people who were desperately trying to help.
“I had a family lined up to adopt this cat after he or she was rescued,” LaChapelle said. “I’m grateful to Hudson’s Tree Service for helping us rescue the poor thing.”
Aug. 29 proved to be a déjà vu moment for the couple. While walking their two dogs, Hoch spotted the same cat stuck in the same tree. The animal remained 30 feet above ground for a week while Hoch, LaChapelle and others, including Julie Craft, an account executive for the Citizen Patriot, grew more concerned about its survival chances.
“The poor thing was stuck up there for days,” said Craft. “Everyone was trying to figure out how to help it down.”
Once again, LaChapelle and Hoch covered rescue costs. They hired Daugherty Tree Service of Jackson for the second rescue attempt, but results were the same: The tabby bolted.
LaChapelle, founder of Brenda’s Animal Rescue and Adoption that rescues strays from Jackson County’s Animal Shelter, said she and her husband have no regrets about the money they shelled out for the evasive feline.
“Who can sleep at night if you know an animal is in need of help?” she said. “Even though we know nothing about this cat, it was well worth $100.”
