Grandfather’s advice saves man from crocodile attack
Published: September 25, 2005
A Kenyan man managed to escape from the jaws of a crocodile by remembering his grandfather’s advice on dealing with the deadly reptiles, he says.
Hillary Amuma, 26, told the Daily Nation that he had been told to jab crocodiles in the eyes - and this advice saved his life.
The crocodile was dragging Mr Amuma into the River Tana by his leg.
“I turned to face the animal that had opened its mouth wide open, ready to make mince meat of me,” he said.
“I looked back at the village, down the river bank, and there was no one in sight. I realised I was going to die.”

He said it was extremely difficult to gather the courage to fight the crocodile - and aim for the eyes - when terror was consuming every fibre of his body.
After a 30-minute fight, he says the crocodile swam back into the river.
He was treated in a local clinic for two weeks for his wounded leg and hand.
However, a local woman had another piece of traditional advice on dealing with crocodiles.
Before fetching water from the river, throw stones into the water to scare off the creatures, Nagule Soka told the Daily Nation.
