miracle escape for woman, 81, pinned under car

Published: September 22, 2005

A PENSIONER had a miraculous escape after her car rolled on top of her.

Police said the 81-year-old woman’s parked car began to roll back down her driveway.

She frantically tried to stop the Peugeot 106 from reaching Codicote Road, near Welwyn, but failed.

The Peugeot collided with a Renault Megan travelling towards Welwyn, which then collided with a Chevrolet Tucama coming from the village.

The 81-year-old was pulled under the Peugeot and trapped under the front of the car in the road, just before 9am last Thursday.

WGC firefighters described the scene as “carnage” when they arrived.

“We turned up and thought it would only be body retrieval,” said one firefighter.

They released her by using inflated airbags to raise the car.

A fast response car and ambulance were both sent to the scene and the woman was taken to the QE2 Hospital in WGC with minor injuries, but later discharged.

The drivers of the other cars were uninjured.

Police closed off Codicote Road and traffic was affected by closures on surrounding roads for almost three hours.
