Missing fishermen rescued from the clutches of the high seas
Published: September 21, 2005
Six fishermen, who had gone missing in high seas off Puri coast about four days back, have been rescued by an offshore oil exploration ship and have been brought safely back to mainland.
According to Riaz Bakshi, off-shore material coordinator for TransOcean company, which is engaged in oil exploration in the Bay of Bengal off Puri, the fishermen were taken in by the drilling ship of the company on Sunday evening.
The fishermen, who were in a small country boat, seemed to have been caught in the inclement conditions for more than a couple of days till they were spotted by the ship.
On being lifted aboard, they were found to be in miserable shape as they had gone without food or water for more than two days. They were also on the verge of hypothermia after being constantly exposed to the cold and wet conditions.
The fishermen were offered immediate treatment and food and were housed aboard the ship till a company chopper flew them to Bhubaneswar on Tuesday morning.
