12 yo rescued from sea

Published: September 21, 2005

ALLEN Wylde-Browne does not consider himself a hero, just a better person, after he helped rescue a Port Macquarie boy from raging seas on Sunday afternoon.

The boy and his father had been enjoying a Sunday afternoon walk along rocks at Nobbys Beach when a slip landed the 12-year-old in deep water.

“When I saw the kid he was holding onto some rocks and only his head was above the water,” Allen said.

“I didn’t really think about it, but I knew if I climbed down to where he was I could probably pull him out.”

What Allen did next helped save the young boy’s life.

“I climbed over to where he was and told him that it was going to be OK,” Allen told the Port Macquarie News.

“He kept saying he was going to die and that he couldn’t really breathe.

“I told him he wasn’t going to die and that if he could just push himself up a little bit I could get him.”

The boy then managed to push himself up a little, allowing Allen to grab hold of him and stop him from sliding further into the water.

“After that more people had been called and another guy came along and was able to pull him right out of the water,” Allen said.

The young boy was airlifted to the Port Macquarie Base Hospital with serious injuries.

Despite a punctured lung and scrapes and bruises, the hospital told the Port News the boy had been transferred from the intensive care unit to the children’s ward. His condition was yesterday described as stable and improving.

“I stayed with the kid till the ambulance officers arrived and took over,” Allen said.

“It felt really good to be able to help, but I don’t feel like a hero, it was just a quick decision.”

Allen’s mum Joanne said she was extremely proud of her son’s bravery.
