Teens rescued from canyon

Published: September 19, 2005

THREE abseilers spent eight hours stranded in a canyon in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, before they could be airlifted to safety.
Two males aged 18 and a 17-year-old girl were abseiling at Claustral Canyon, Mount Tomah, when they were unable to negotiate a difficult section at Calcutta Falls at about 10am on Sunday.

Their more experienced guide had already abseiled ahead and, unable to return, was forced to complete the canyon and walk out to alert emergency services, shortly before 4.30pm, an NRMA Careflight spokesman said.

Two paramedics were winched into the canyon to join Blue Mountains Police Rescue Squads in a desperate search for the missing three in fading light.

The three were found suffering severe hypothermia, the spokesman said, and were airlifted to Bankstown Hospital for treatment shortly before 6pm.

Claustral Canyon is one of the most difficult adventures in the Blue Mountains and should be attempted only by experienced abseilers with good thermal protection, the spokesman said.
