Boy rescued from quicksand

Published: September 19, 2005

A BOY who was trapped in quicksand for more than two hours had to be dug out by hand by rescuers on the New South Wales South coast.
Emergency services were called to Tura Beach, Merimbula shortly after noon yesterday following reports a 15-year-old boy was stuck in a two-metre quicksand pit, police said.

Fire brigade and police officers were joined by members of the public who had to dig the boy out by hand because the pit walls continually collapsed, and heavy equipment could not be used.

Material had to be placed around the boy’s head to prevent him being covered by sand, and he was fed oxygen throughout the two-hour rescue.

He was taken to Pambula Hospital suffering shock and hypothermia, and was kept in overnight for observation.
