The second annual Pfizer Long Island two-day walk raised $355,000 for breast cancer corporations throughout LI. Event organizers, sponsors, participants and beneficiaries gathered to celebrate on August 10 at Carrabba’s Italian Grill in Smithtown.
In addition to the beneficiaries the money will also be distributed as scholarships to be awarded in 2006 to Nassau and Suffolk high school seniors who have been affected by breast cancer.
The two-day, 35-mile walk begins on a today at Smith Point County Park at the Fire Island barrier beach in Shirley and continues along scenic Suffolk County roads. The walk will be supported by the Suffolk County Police Department, a qualified medical team and local ambulance personnel.
Participants camp overnight, after completing 20 miles, at Cathedral Pines County Park in Middle Island. The following day, walkers continue for another 15 miles to Smith Point County Park.
At the celebration the money was distributed to each of the designated Long Island beneficiaries: Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program; Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition; Brentwood Bay Shore Cancer Coalition; Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Women’s Center; Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory; Cure Mommy’s Breast Cancer; Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition; The Maurer Foundation for Breast Health Education; North Shore Neighbors Breast Cancer Coalition; Sister’s Network Suffolk County; Islip Breast Cancer Coalition; WALK for Women Breast Cancer Fund; West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition; and Nassau University Medical Center Breast Cancer Center.
