Bad hair day for Haile teacher
Published: September 17, 2005
The drumline pounded out an upbeat drumroll while Haile Middle School students reinforced the beat with their feet and social studies teacher Scott Redmon took his final stroll around the middle school’s gym with a full head of hair.
As Haile Principal Janet Kerley and Assistant Principal Sharon Scarbrough began clipping off Redmon’s longer layers, 700 of the school’s 930 students eagerly chanted “take it off, take it off.”
Redmon’s wife and children nervously watched as the clippers slowly buzzed a fresh, clean Mohawk atop Redmon’s head.
It was a promise Redmon made to his sixth-grade students last year: If the school was labeled an “A” school for the fifth year in a row, he would get a Mohawk.
Dawn Redmon, Scott’s wife, initially gave the OK, but wasn’t so sure about the idea when it came down to it.
“Earlier he told me, ‘Hair grows back, but doing something for a kid can last a lifetime,’ ” Dawn Redmon said.
Post-Mohawk, Scott Redmon, who hadn’t yet seen his new hair-do, simply smiled.
“I can’t tell what it looks like, but from the look of my wife’s eyes, it’s not too pretty,” Redmon said.
To say it was an academic celebration assembly like no other would be an understatement.
The celebration was held to honor students for their academic efforts. Students who received Cs or better and no 3s in conduct on their first progress report for the 2005-06 school year were invited to attend.
The Mohawk was only part of the afternoon’s comical acts.
Kerley, Scarbrough, Little and School Resource Officer Carrie Dixon, all dressed to impress in authentic “Village People” costumes, performed their rendition of “YMCA.”
Lakewood Ranch High School cheerleaders and the Braden River High School Junior ROTC color guard were also on campus to help celebrate.
Sixth-grader Zack Bessette said his favorite act was the Lakewood Ranch High School drumline, but the Mohawk was equally entertaining.
“I definitely liked the Mohawk. I think I may get one just like it,” Bessette said as he was called to the center of the gym by a friend to take part in a 100-person closing performance of “YMCA.”
