Toddler reunited with mom missing since hurricane

Published: September 15, 2005

Shakeem Williams, 18-months-old, was reunited with her mother and grandmother in a tearful reunion late Tuesday.

“I love you. You love me?” said the child’s crying grandmother. “I’m so sorry.”

Both women then hugged the foster mother who had been caring for little Shakeem. They promised to keep in touch.

“I’m so thankful right now… excited, I feel blessed,” said the grandmother. “I’m just so happy to have my grandbaby back and it’s all because of the good Lord.”

The women were driven to Houston by a man who took them into his home in Louisiana.

Earlier Wednesday, Children’s Protective Services officials announced they had located the family of 3-year-old David Antoine.

He had been on his own since a caregiver dropped him off at the Superdome. Another family took him on the bus with them to Houston.

The 3-year-old’s stepfather was in a shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana when he saw a news report featuring the boy. He contacted Child Protective Services and the boy’s mother’s identity and location were confirmed.

Little David’s mother is in a Lafayette hospital. Unable to care for her son, he was placed in a foster home. That foster family no longer has a home so a CPS hearing is scheduled for Wednesday to decide exactly where David will go.

CPS has reunited more than 100 children separated from their families during the chaos that followed Katrina.
