‘I love you’ says autism miracle boy
Published: September 15, 2005
THEY were the precious words a devoted mum had waited four years to hear from her little boy.
As Kimberly Mason tucked up son Spencer in bed he whispered: “I love you.” - in a show of affection he had been unable to give till then because autism had trapped him in his own world.
The yearned-for breakthrough was possible because of a revolutionary therapy that gives hope to all parents whose children suffer from the condition.
Four-year-old Spencer started showing autistic tendencies two years ago. He was unable to communicate effectively and became preoccupied by repetitive behaviour.
Unhappy with the advice they were getting from health professionals, parents Kimberly, 31, and Leighan, 34, from Hale, Altrincham, heard about a treatment programme in America claiming to cure autism.
They flew to the US earlier this year to take a course in the technique and now just two months after beginning the treatment, Spencer’s condition is dramatically improving.
Eye contact
He now makes eye contact with his parents and is able to express his own opinions and hold conversations. But Kimberly said the real turning point for her came that night as she put her son to bed.
She said: “I always tell Spencer I love him when I put him to bed but because of his condition he has never been able to say it back. This particular night, I said: “I love you, do you love mummy?” In a little voice he said: “I love you.”

Unraveling the Mystery of Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder: A Mother’s Story of Research and Recovery“It makes me quite emotional to think about it now. It isn’t something Spencer would have been able to say before and shows how much things have moved on since my husband and I started doing the programme.
“We still have a long way to go but Spencer seems much happier already and is communicating with us. Before if we asked him to do something it was as if he just gave up and did it, but now he will sometimes say ‘No, I don’t want to’. He has an opinion about anything and everything and we are really happy about that!”
