Katrina evacuees find love in Panhandle, wed at shelter

Published: September 14, 2005

Bobby Thompson and Diana Gillespie pledged to honor each other, for better and for worse.

They’ve already seen the worst. Two weeks ago, the Biloxi, Mississippi, residents lost everything when Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast.

Since then, they’ve been making their home at an American Red Cross shelter in Crestview.

Red Cross volunteer Bonnie Eldridge helped 25-year-old Thompson plan his proposal to 22-year-old Gillespie on Friday .

She says Thompson told her that after losing everything he had, he wasn’t going to let Gillespie get away.

The couple got married at the shelter yesterday.

Local businesses donated flowers, a wedding cake, dinner for the reception, a dress for the bride and a tuxedo for the groom.

The couple say they plan to return to Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
