Heroes save teenage girl
Published: September 14, 2005
TWO Bunbury men have saved a teenager’s life after she lost control of her car and plummeted 10 metres into a swollen river.
Bob Thompson and Rhett Topliss were driving in opposite directions when they witnessed the P-plated Holden Commodore leave the busy road, skid across landscaping and become airborn before it landed upside-down in the Preston River.
Police and emergency crew say the Australind woman would surely have died if it were not for the quick actions of the men.
“They are heroes,” one fire and rescue volunteer said.
“If it weren’t for the men, the woman would have drowned.
“They deserve a bravery medal.”
The accident happened as the 18 year-old woman was leaving the Eelup roundabout, heading towards Eaton.
Rescuer Bob Thompson saw the car become airborne as it left the road.
He stopped his car, ran down the embankment and into the river.
As he was standing in the muddy water, the disorientated woman managed to grab Bob’s leg.
He opened the car door and dragged her out of the vehicle to safety.
Police and St John Ambulance soon arrived at the scene, taking the woman to Bunbury Regional Hospital.
Luckily she escaped with only minor injuries.
“If you are doing the speed limit these things won’t happen,” Sgt Mark Smith said.
“The road was not at fault..there will not be an investigation into the conditions,” he said.
“She’s just lucky to be alive.”
