64 child labourers rescued

Published: September 13, 2005

Sixty-four child labourers, engaged in workplaces of goldsmiths in Coimbatore, were rescued during raids carried out by officials of the district administration today.

The raids were conducted as part of the Tamil Nadu government’s policy to make the entire state child labour-free by December 2005, official sources said.

Officials in three batches raided 150 workplaces and found 64 children in 40 of them.

Nine of the children were from West Bengal, eight from Kerala, one each from Maharashtra and Karnataka and the rest from various parts of Tamil Nadu, they said.

Steps have been taken to send 19 children to their respective states and others to special schools in the city, the sources said, adding action would be taken against the management for engaging children below 14 years in their workplace.
