Family Separated By Hurricane Reunited In Chicago

Published: September 11, 2005

A family separated in the hurricane’s aftermath is now back together.

The heartwarming reunion took place Saturday on the city’s South Side. CBS 2’s Pamela Jones was there.

Tears of joy flowed from a couple of best friends since the seventh grade who were reunited by Hurricane Katrina.

Carolyn Causey believes her buddy in Chicago could sense her determination to ride out the storm at her New Orleans home.

“Actually we just paid the last payment at our home and to say that we had to evacuate out that,” Causey said. “I was not leaving. My friend, she knew my heart.”

“It’s like I couldn’t sleep. And I knew that they wasn’t out there eating, I couldn’t eat,” said Teesha Coleman.

Chicago church volunteers met Causey, her daughter and two grandchildren at a shelter in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It was a chance meeting during a mission to help several shelters in the area.

“This is just an example of what God’s prayers can do,” said James Dukes with the Liberation Christian Center

The volunteers offered to take the Causeys with them on their mission. It was a trip that took them from Baton Rouge to Jennings, Louisiana, where they found Causey’s husband Craig, his sister and her two sons.

“Hope was starting to fade, you know,” said Craig Causey. “I was in really dire straits. You know, I didn’t know. My life as I known it was over.”

Carolyn and Craig Causey still have faith as they await the release of two of their sons still stranded at shelters in Texas.

“I was told one of my sons is in Houston, but Houston would not let me into the dome because I didn’t have on a wristband,” Carolyn said.

Bishop Larry Trotter is helping to get the family some identification from FEMA.

He says the Causey’s son and daughter haven’t been released because their IDs and those of their family were destroyed with all of their belongings.

Hopefully, the new IDs will speed the release of the children, and Trotter’s asking Illinois officials to help.
