Baby fights off MRSA hospital bug

Published: September 10, 2005

A prematurely-born baby is said to be recovering well after being diagnosed with the MRSA superbug while at a Bristol hospital.

Joshua Jeffries Ralph, of Highbridge, Somerset, was born eight weeks early at St Michael’s Hospital.

A United Bristol Healthcare Trust spokeswoman said: “It is never possible to confirm without doubt the source of MRSA or similar infections.”

But she confirmed the hospital nursery had an “extremely low rate of MRSA”.

‘Regret’

The hospital’s director of infection control has met Joshua’s mother on a number of occasions.

The spokeswoman said Joshua was making a “good recovery” from the infection.

She said: “On this occasion, in line with national policy, a screening process was immediately instigated.

“UBHT takes the issue of infection control very seriously and staff are vigilant about reducing the risk of MRSA and other infections.”

MRSA is a potentially lethal bacterium that causes infections in humans and is difficult to combat because it has developed a resistance to certain antibiotics.

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus usually strikes in hospitals, where conditions suit it.
