Church says ‘miracle’ tears are wrong sex

Published: September 9, 2005

ROMAN Catholic authorities in Italy ruled yesterday that “tears of blood” on a statue of Saint Padre Pio were female, so could not be “miraculous”.

Padre Pio was a miracle-working hermit who died in 1968 and was canonised three years ago.

Last May his statue at Marsicovetere, in Basilicata, was reported to have wept tears of blood. However the local Curia said yesterday that “supernatural intervention” could be excluded because tests had shown the blood belonged to a woman.

In July worshippers at Acerra near Naples claimed to have seen a statue of the Virgin Mary move its legs as if trying to walk.

The Vatican takes a cautious line on such apparitions and has still to rule on a statue of the Virgin Mary at Civitavecchia, the port near Rome, which allegedly began weeping tears of blood ten years ago.
