Bikers to ride in charity Toy Run

Published: September 9, 2005

Tens of thousands of motorcyclists are expected to ride in the 24th annual United Bikers of Maine Toy Run on Sunday.

This event is the nation’s largest nonsponsored toy run, according to UBM Cumberland County director Ric Dodge. Last year’s toy run brought in 13,000 motorcycles, 20,000 riders and 14,500 toys, Dodge said.

“Bikers in general are pretty generous people,” he said. “… I don’t think people really understand what UBM is. We are a biker’s organization, but we are very much into taking care of the community.”

Dodge said various county chapters of UBM organize similar, smaller toy runs and rides throughout the summer to raise funds for various charities and causes. Themes for the events include children’s cancer fundraisers and food baskets for the hungry around Thanksgiving.

All bikers are invited to the toy run, including those not affiliated with UBM, Dodge said. Gov. John E. Baldacci frequently rides his motorcycle in the toy run, and may show up at this one, Dodge said.

The toy run primarily benefits the children, but the Salvation Army will give people the chance to make donations to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. Those wishing to make donations may do so at either of the two vans that will be parked at the Augusta Civic Center and the Windsor Fairgrounds.

The Toy Run Parade will leave the civic center at 1 p.m. and travel to the fairgrounds. Whiskey River will provide live music.
