Family hit by hurricane reunited with Watertown relatives

Published: September 8, 2005

“I felt like the world was coming to an end and said it couldn’t get any better but when we came up here it started slowly getting better,” said hurricane victim Ashley Wallace.

Ashley and her family came to Watertown after being displaced from Hurricane Katrina. They lived in New Orleans, a place they say they’ll probably never live in again.

“I guess we try to start our lives over here, so far the people have been kind enough to help us so much and we thank them for that, so we here, so time to start over now. Hopefully everybody will be alright when we do hear from them,” said hurricane victim Sigfrud Chest.

The family made their way to Watertown after a family member here contacted The Border, a radio station in Watertown, asking for help. The station then bought the displaced family a bus ticket.

Now that they’re here Ashley will even have a place to work. She worked at Wal-Mart in Louisiana so Wal-Mart here in Watertown is welcoming her.

“When she comes in on Saturday we’re going to welcome here with open arms, she’s a wonderful person and so devastated,” said Pamela Longton, Wal-Mart Personnel Manager.

“Don’t take things for granted, just to wake up in the morning in your own bed. It’s the little things that really, really matter. Don’t take your family for granted,” said Chest.

Wednesday, The Border held a 12-hour relief-a-thon for the displaced family. Lots of donations came in, including a car.
