Habitat For Humanity “Constrcution Blitz” To Build Homes For Hurricane Victims

Published: September 6, 2005

A group famous for building homes for the poor is planning a construction blitz in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Habitat for Humanity said later this month, it hopes to begin “Operation Home Delivery” in Jackson, Miss.

Volunteers will assemble housing frames and put them on trucks to Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

Once on site, about 30 volunteers will spend roughly a week erecting each home. Typically, Habitat for Humanity builds 1, 200- square foot homes with three bedrooms.

Former President Jimmy Carter, who’s volunteered with the group for over 20 years, said this is Habitat’s most important mission yet in the United States.

The group said it already has over $450,000 in donations. Each of its typical homes costs about $66,000.
