Hair salon helps hurricane relief effort

Fifteen-year-old Amanda Kozlowski gave up plans with her friends this Labor Day to help her Mom raise money for the survivors of Hurricane Katrina.
Amanda Kozlowski, Helping Hurricane Relief Effort:
“It’s just so horrible seeing those kids over there hungry.”
Johnella Kozlowski kept wondering what she could do to help the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.
Johnella Kozlowski, Helping Hurricane Relief Effort:
“And I said to myself, ‘The only thing I know how to do is cut hair.’”
So Johnella decided to open her Bloomingdale Hair Salon on Bell Shoals Road Sunday and Monday, and donate 100 percent of the proceeds to the relief effort.
Johnella Kozlowski:
“It’s sad that people lost their homes, they lost everything they know. They don’t know what tomorrow’s going to bring.”
Regular customers like Jackie Martin are happy to help Johnella raise money for people who need it desperately.
Jackie Martin, Regular Customer:
“That’s what life’s all about, to be there for people to help one another. It’s very important.”
On Sunday, Johnella and her helpers raised $451.89. All of that money will go to the American Red Cross.
Kent Ortiz, Helping Hurricane Relief Effort:
“Hopefully everything will make a difference and we can help.”
Hairstylist Kent Ortiz works at another salon, but is helping Johnella’s hurricane relief effort on this holiday.
Kent Ortiz:
“To help other people is what it’s all about. That’s what we’re all here for, and if everybody would think the same way, I think we’d all be a lot better off.”
Robb Lee, Kozlowski’s Father:
“She’s always been one to help even when she was little, she loved to help.”
That’s Johnella’s Dad, who’s proud of his daughter’s commitment to help others, one haircut at a time.
