Man, man’s best friend reunited after 2 years

Published: August 31, 2005

Geordi finally came home.

After being lost for two years, the husky and Labrador retriever mix finally found his owner, Chris Kvaal of St. Cloud.

Kvaal’s wife, Kumiko Highley, recognized Geordi when he was featured as the St. Cloud Times’ Pet of the Week earlier this month.

“I looked at it and I knew it was him immediately,” Kvaal said.

Geordi, named after a character on “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” was adopted by Kvaal in 1996. Kvaal, now an assistantbiology professor atSt. Cloud State University, lived in Iowa City, Iowa, at the time.

“I was single,” Kvaal said. “I was living by myself. I thought, ‘It’s time for a dog.’”

Geordi was an asset to his owner — Highley came over to walk him when she was dating Kvaal.

In his first eight years with Kvaal, Geordi watched his owner get married, move to Minnesota and have two children. Then one day, the mellow pooch simply disappeared.

It was 2003, and Kvaal doesn’t know what happened. All he knows is that Geordi wasn’t in the garage one morning.

Kvaal started a massive search, whichincluded putting up posters at animal clinics and thehumane society.

But nothing resulted from the search. Up until this summer, Kvaal stopped and looked whenever he saw someone walking a black dog.

Then came that fateful morning. Highley couldn’t believe what she saw in the newspaper.

“I was shocked,” she said. “It was bizarre.”

Especially because Kvaal threw away Geordi’s dog house, leash and toys in July.

Kvaal rushed to the Tri-County Humane Society to pick up his dog that morning. It took a few minutes for Geordi to recognize his owner. But soon, the dog knew he was going home.

He jumped in the car, put his head out the window and the reunited pair headed home.

Geordi needed to adjust to some changes. During the past two years, Kvaal and Highley had another baby and their two older children were on the move. Geordi doesn’t mind though.

But the unknown intrigues the family. Kvaal wonders where his dog has been all this time.

“I’m hoping someone reads his story and tells me where he’s been for two years,” he said.
