Dog survives 6 weeks in well

Published: August 26, 2005

A seven-year-old dog that was rescued in Amherst last week after being trapped in a water well for more than a month.
Owners of Wizard, a mixed-breed dog, say he ran away on the Fourth of July after being scared by loud fireworks.

Teresa McCrickard says Wizard bit through the chain-link fence and remained missing for more than six weeks. Wizard was found in a six-foot-deep well less than two miles from home.

Doctors at Amherst Veterinary Hospital say the dog survived on rodents and well water, keeping him hydrated in 100-degree heat.

Wizard went from about 60 to 40 pounds.

Patrick Gries, McCrickard’s neighbor and the vet who treated Wizard, calls it remarkable that the dog was not “life-threateningly ill” after his ordeal.
